Tipper Gore Funds National Expansion of Ending the Silence
Dear NAMI Leaders,
As we kick off our convention this week and people from all across the country are heading to Washington, DC, NAMI has the pleasure of announcing the exciting news that we have received a generous gift of $1 million from Former Second Lady of the United States, Tipper Gore.
Mrs. Gore is a major national philanthropist with more than 30 years of committed interest in mental health advocacy, who is looking at how best to make an investment that will have great impact. We should feel extremely proud that she chose NAMI as the organization who could help her realize that impact.
The gift will fund the nationwide expansion of NAMI Ending the Silence, enabling state and affiliate organizations to grow the early intervention program. In turn, young people get critical information about mental illness and know they are not alone.
The gift ties in with our organizational strategic priority of early intervention and focus on youth. Research shows that NAMI Ending the Silence makes a difference in people’s lives at a time when support and treatment can have the greatest impact on lifelong outcomes. This is part of a growing trend – Providence St. Joseph Health, 100 Women in Finance – among donors who understand an investment in NAMI is an investment in our shared mission to build better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. These funders are making it possible for NAMI to bring financial support to all parts of our alliance.
It is the strength of our alliance that brings these opportunities to NAMI; the tireless work of our members, volunteers and leaders locally, regionally and nationally working in alignment to allow us to bring focus and attention to mental illness and those it touches. Our alliance will continue to be strengthened and our impact will be greater when we leverage our collective talents in focused ways.
Please see a copy of the press release that went out today about the gift. I personally wanted to make sure the announcement reached you all because this could not have happened without every part of the alliance working together on our common mission. We look forward to celebrating this success, and all our accomplishments, with those who are joining us this week in Washington, DC for the convention.
